Our lovingly restored stone mill is set amidst spectacular scenery dotted with medieval villages, castles, green meadows, chestnut woods and mountain streams. The mill lies at the edge of a picturesque village beside a stream and close to the stunning ‘Parco dei Cento Laghi’, within easy reach of the Ligurian coast and beautiful Cinque Terre.
VILLA IL RUSCELLO - SLEEPS 2
More villa photos will be added soon, now that the renovation is complete
Il Ruscello is a romantic hideaway reached through an old passageway which takes you down to its terrace alongside the stream. With pretty views up to the village and its medieval bridge and castle it’s a relaxing spot to while away a few hours with a book and a glass of wine or soaking up the sun on a lounger. The mill has a lovely rustic atmosphere with its original character retained and Il Ruscello has been furnished to a high standard.
The living room has a comfortable leather sofa, TV, video with plenty of videos and books. The kitchen area has a table and chairs, oven and hob, fridge, dishwasher and washing machine. French doors lead onto the delightful terrace where a table and chairs are provided for eating al fresco.
A stone arched doorway takes you into the characterful double bedroom with its original beams, terracotta floors and exposed stones. The en-suite has a shower, toilet and feature round sink. From here there is a wardrobe area cut into the rock which you walk into - we have created this out of a space that villagers have told us is where they used to hide escaped prisoners of war during World War Two!
VILLA IL CALZOLAIO - SLEEPS 4-6
More villa photos will be added soon, now that the renovation is complete
Il Calzolaio has been recently restored to a very high standard and with its exposed stone walls, wood beamed ceilings and terracotta floors much of its original charm has been retained. Decorated in muted tones and tasteful furnishings Il Calzolaio is a beautiful apartment from which to enjoy your Tuscan holiday.
The comfortable living room has a sofa bed and a well equipped kitchen area with washing machine and dishwasher. French doors lead onto a balcony looking out over the medieval bridge and mountain stream, perfect for al fresco dining. From the living room a staircase takes you up to the first floor.
With delightful views up to the castle and village the romantic double bedroom has an en-suite shower room. The pretty twin bedroom has exposed stone walls giving it lots of rustic character. The main bathroom is also located upstairs.
Outside, passing through the passageway and down a few steps there is a further sunbathing area which is a perfect place to relax and watch the stream meandering by. The mill was built in 1736 and in later years was home for a large family. The original owner Achille still remembers his 'Nonno' making and repairing shoes from one of the rooms at the front of the house – this is how Il Calzolaio got its name.
LUNIGIANA TOURIST INFORMATION
The area around the mill is absolute heaven for walkers and nature lovers. The rural way of life is very much in evidence here and goes on as it always has done. In the springtime the countryside is filled with wild flowers and it is not unusual to see deer or to catch sight of peregrine falcons or golden eagles and in the warmer evenings of early summer it's time for magical fireflies.
On hot summer days you can picnic up in the mountains and enjoy the spectacular views or perhaps spend an afternoon relaxing by the river and taking a dip in the clear river pools. Alternatively, there is a swimming pool in Comano a ten-minute walk or a few minutes by car. For the more energetic there is horse riding, tennis and numerous marked trails to walk, ranging from gentle hill walks to tackling the more strenuous hike across the Apennine ridge.
For eating out there are several excellent restaurants near to the mill to choose from, the closest being two in Comano a short walk away. They are all very reasonably priced and provide good home cooking and a friendly atmosphere.
Throughout summer there are village ‘festas’ where you will be welcomed by the friendly locals. You will be encouraged to join in with the dancing and have the opportunity to sample some of the delicious regional foods including torta d’erbe and panigacci made from local chestnut flour. Castello has its very own ‘festa’ in August and Fivizzano and Filletto both host colourful medieval pageants. The summer is followed by the glorious colours of autumn and the golden glow of Tuscan sunsets, the gathering in of chestnuts and olives and hunts for porcini mushrooms. In winter it might be cold but the sun still shines and the mountains are covered in snow. If you enjoy winter sports, there are several small ski resorts in Lunigiana, the closest being at Prato Spllia about 30 minutes drive away.
Lunigiana, the northernmost tip of Tuscany, is set between the Apennine Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea and is neither remote nor isolated. It is well served by motorways and is convenient for several airports. The stunning Ligurian coast and elegant resort of Forte dei Marmi are all within easy reach.
The ‘Gulf of Poets’, with its beautiful rocky bays, and so called because Byron, Shelley and Keates once lived here, can be reached in around thirty minutes. From Lerici you can take a boat ride to the famous ‘Cinque Terre’, five villages clinging to the cliffs of this striking coastline. The villages are linked by paths which afford breathtaking views of the rocky coves and deep blue sea.
For days spent sightseeing, the cultural centres of Florence, Pisa, Parma, Genoa and Lucca are all accessible within one and a half hours by car.
